The game show also contrasts on the understanding of the English language between one party that is portrayed to know English well and another that speaks it in a different form. An Anglo male is seen to know the correct way to address people yet Consuela calls others by their first name instead of last. This projection shows the way that some English-learning Latinos/Hispanics would professionally address employers in this form.
The way Consuela professionally addresses her boss could demonstrate an example of partially-fluent English speaking Latinos or Hispanics in the workforce. I have witnessed this myself while seeing they way some partially-fluent English speakers address their employers first names if they are not able to correctly pronounce it, which is sometimes the case. Other times, they forget their names. The part that cripples the image is that those who do not address others properly in a professional environment are needed to be seen in a dim-witted manner. It is agreeable that there is this type of speech impairment among some Latinos in the workforce yet they should noy be seen in this type of atmosphere.
I have a problem with the way many programs now days just bash on Hispanics as if they weren't even humans. Family Guy is not the only program that bashes on Hispanics but there are many such as South Park, Saturday Night Live, and That 70's show. There are many more and it seems to me that every show that contains a Hispanic actor or cartoon character today has to have an accent, play the role of a laborer, or struggling to survive in today's society. Directors need to stop promoting this as comedy and instead give Hispanics a chance to succeed in the Film Industry by giving them starring roles. All these shows are doing is promoting hispanic stereotypes that make it harder for Hispanics to succeed in today's society.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean there. We already know what the common stereotype for that is; the border hopper from Mexico who comes here illegally and slates himself on a labor job, and who knows very little to nothing on English. What happens when someone gets a job? Nothing. If an unemployed person cannot find a job, who must get the blame? Illegal immigrants get the blame. We already know who specifically is going to get the blame here. A Latino actor is sometimes going to be given a stereotypical role and such because directors they feel it is necessary to do so.
ReplyDeleteI agree with chingadasos for the most part. It is not only limited among Hispanics as well. Throughout many of these shows, they made fun of many racial, religion, historic, and pop-culture related stereotypes. And that's one of the many reasons why I don't watch these shows anymore. Another reason is that, just by watching and taking in what these shows are showing, actually kills your brain cells. True story; just kidding.
