Religious stereotypes? Really?

This particular blog entry isn't about Family Guy stereotyping about an ethnic race, but the peoples from a religion which has been ridiculed on for years and years and years....etc; which is Judaism. Jews have been pushed around and made fun of since before the stereotype came around where Jewish people have a love for money, or the process of making so much income. In this clip from Family Guy, Peter Griffin and his wife have a dispute on settling how to deal with ways to keep their lottery winnings around:

With such a portrayal of the Jewish population, thanks to this show, this could implement a discriminating idea into the minds of young viewers of this show. Because of this short clip, kids of the new generation may not want to socialize with other Jewish children if they have a sum of money in possession because they could fear what Peter Griffin was afraid of in the clip above. It is unclear on how Jewish stereotypes such as this came about, but with the many Jewish people I knew back then and now, Jewish people are nothing at all like the ones Family Guy illustrates. They may make a lot of money and have a lot in possession, but they do not obsess over it to the point of how Family Guy views it. This helps explains a point of why Family Guy is not funny; it is just rude and unaccountable for the jokes and skits they portray.

  1. Although I don’t necessarily believe that Family Guy is poking fun at the religion of Judaism per se, the show is discriminating against Jewish people. Having known a couple Jewish people myself, I don’t consider them to be “in love with money.” Never have any of my friends acted like that, and as you mentioned, I don’t understand where this stereotype came from. Not only that, but as in the included clip portrays, not all Jewish men dress as they do either. While I do find Family Guy to be entertaining, recently their jokes have been known to be quite discriminating. While there may be negative effects to having clips shown to children these days, there is a reason shows such as these are shown at a later time. Though this action TV networks have taken in order for children not to view such shows, this doesn’t exactly stop children from watching them. Instead of ending stereotypes, Family Guy is only encouraging them and showing children it’s alright to use them. So what do you think should be done about it?

    1. Maybe not poking fun at them, but Family Guy is giving their audience a certain perspective of how Jewish people behave today. I believe it is also false, because I have never seen such behavior like in the clip, so the illustration demonstrated in the clip is indeed exaggerated. To be honest, the only thing I could think of stopping such discrimination is consulting the creators and demand change. But even with our claims, I have a feeling they wouldn't even listen.

  2. I do not understand where this stereotype came from. I also do not understand the stereotype. The stereotype that Jewish people have a lot of money does not make sense. Then in the clip, Peter is scared to give them his money. This stereotype seems to contradict itself. If Jews have a lot of money, why would they obsess over other people’s money? Other people besides the Jewish have a lot of money, but where is that stereotype? I find the whole “money-loving Jew” to be strange way to attack the wealthy. Another thing that is interesting is that, according to the stereotype and the clip, Peter is acting like a Jew. The irony is bitter sweet.

    1. I totally agree! Whenever I hear jokes involving a Jewish person and money, I think to myself; "Why are they teasing a Jewish person, and why does it have to be about money?" If they do possess a large sum of money, then why would there be a reason to pick on them? If they have a lot of money and people stereotype about them, I just feel that they are jealous in a sense of how Jewish people are more rich than others are. Nothing to be made fun of, just leave it alone and stop the stereotype before it spreads out to the new generations to come.
